TYT Turkish has 40 questions, and paragraph questions are the largest group. They are not hard because of vocabulary; they are hard because the options are all partly true. The skill is choosing the option the paragraph actually supports, quickly, about a minute per question.
The four steps
- 1Read the question first: is it asking for the main idea, a detail, an inference, or what cannot be concluded?
- 2Read the paragraph once and say its main idea in one short sentence.
- 3Test each option: is it said or clearly implied in the text, or is it just true in real life?
- 4Eliminate options that are too broad, too narrow, or added from outside the text.
Worked example
Paragraph (EXAMEV practice): “Many students think that studying longer means learning more. But hours alone do not show what has been learned. A student who tests themselves for twenty minutes and finds their mistakes often learns more than one who rereads notes for two hours.” Question: What is the main idea of this paragraph?
- A) Students should study for twenty minutes a day. Too narrow: twenty minutes is an example, not the point.
- B) Rereading notes is useless. Too strong: the text compares, it does not say rereading is useless.
- C) The way you study matters more than how long you study. Correct: this is what the whole paragraph argues.
- D) Students do not study enough. Not in the text.
The right option is the one the paragraph proves, not the one you agree with.
Practice routine
- 20-30 paragraph questions a day, timed.
- For every wrong answer, write why the correct option was right and why yours was wrong.
- Read a short article a day in Turkish; speed comes from reading habit.
