The grade 12 English book (English for Palestine) has eight units, and the questions come in three kinds: reading comprehension, grammar and vocabulary, and writing. Each kind needs a different method.
Reading: answer from the text, not from memory
- 1Read the questions first, so you know what to look for.
- 2Find the paragraph with the key words or their synonyms.
- 3Answer in your own words unless the question asks you to quote.
- 4For 'why' questions, give the reason the text gives, not your opinion.
Grammar points that repeat
- Causatives: have/get + object + past participle. 'I had my phone repaired' means someone else repaired it.
- Stative verbs (know, believe, own, need) are not used in continuous forms: 'I know the answer', not 'I am knowing'.
- Verb + -ing or + to: enjoy reading, avoid making; decide to study, hope to pass. 'Stop smoking' (quit) differs from 'stop to smoke' (pause in order to).
- Present perfect continuous for an action continuing up to now: 'I have been studying for two hours.'
Writing: a letter or paragraph with a clear plan
- First sentence: why you are writing.
- One paragraph per point, each with a reason or example.
- Match the style to the reader: formal letters avoid contractions and slang.
- End with what you want to happen, then a correct closing.
Most lost marks in grammar come from a few repeated rules. Keep a list of the ones you get wrong and test yourself on them every week.
