Bonjour greets someone during the day; bonsoir is an evening greeting. Merci means thank you; de rien answers thanks. Use s’il vous plaît in a polite request and au revoir when leaving.
Je m’appelle introduces your name. Je viens de gives your place of origin. French expresses age with avoir: j’ai dix-huit ans. Tu addresses one familiar person; vous is also used to address one person formally.
Learn nouns with their articles. Un/le are masculine singular; une/la are feminine singular. Les is definite plural; des is indefinite plural. Le and la become l’ before a vowel sound: l’école. Une does not shorten before amie.
The verb changes with its subject. Être: je suis, tu es, nous sommes. Avoir: il/elle a, ils/elles ont. Regular -er verbs use -e with elle and -ez with vous. Keep the subject and verb together when learning.
Je voudrais makes a polite request. Written negation usually places ne...pas around the verb; ne becomes n’ before a vowel. Où asks where, combien asks how much. Deux is 2 and huit is 8.
Look for the exact detail requested: a place, number, time, activity or object. Vit means lives, frères means brothers, ouvre means opens and ferme means closes. In short notices, compare both times before choosing an answer.
This beginner starter covers vocabulary, grammar and short reading. It is not a complete CEFR course or a listening and speaking assessment.
