Since 21 January 2026 the TOEFL iBT is a different test. Reading and Listening are adaptive, the long integrated essay is gone, and scores are reported on a 1–6 scale. Many practice books and websites still teach the old tasks. This guide lists the TOEFL iBT 2026 tasks section by section so your practice matches the test you will sit.
Reading: three task types
- Complete the Words: a short academic paragraph with missing letters in some words. You restore each word from context and spelling.
- Read in Daily Life: short real-world texts such as notices, emails and schedules, with questions on detail and purpose.
- Read an Academic Passage: a shorter academic text than the old test, with questions on main idea, detail, vocabulary and inference.
Listening: four task types
- Listen and Choose a Response: you hear one line and pick the most natural reply.
- Listen to a Conversation: a campus or everyday dialogue.
- Listen to an Announcement: practical information from a university or service.
- Listen to an Academic Talk: a short lecture with questions on the key ideas.
Writing and Speaking
- Build a Sentence: put given words in the right order to form a correct sentence.
- Write an Email: a short, polite email for a stated purpose.
- Write for an Academic Discussion: add your view to an online class discussion and support it.
- Speaking, Listen and Repeat: repeat sentences you hear accurately.
- Speaking, Take an Interview: answer interview questions on a familiar topic.
Check which score your university asks for. ETS reports the new 1–6 band score, and during the transition it also shows a comparable 0–120 score. Rules and dates are on ets.org.
How to practise
- Learn each task type separately first, then mix them in timed sets.
- Because Reading and Listening adapt to you, accuracy early in a section matters. Do not rush the first questions.
- Build academic vocabulary in context and practise word formation. Complete the Words depends on both.
- For Write an Email, learn a clear frame: greeting, purpose, details, polite close.
How EXAMEV helps
The EXAMEV TOEFL iBT bank was rebuilt for the 2026 format. It has 527 questions in five units: Reading, Listening, Writing, Speaking, and academic vocabulary and structure. Every question has an explanation. Listening items use printed transcripts, so pair them with real audio practice. Start with a 25-question practice set, then move to the full 50-question mock exam.
