Grade 11 chemistry, term 1, is the base that grade 12 builds on: bonding, calculations, solutions and energy. This guide walks through the grade 11 chemistry term 1 question bank for the 2027 cohort unit by unit, with one worked example from each unit.
Unit 1: Chemical bonding
- Lewis symbols, ionic bonds and ionic formulas, covalent bonds.
- Electronegativity and bond polarity, molecular polarity, intermolecular forces.
- Molecular shapes with VSEPR: CH4 tetrahedral, NH3 trigonal pyramidal, H2O bent.
Unit 2: Chemical calculations
- Percentage by mass of oxygen in water: 16 ÷ 18 × 100 = 88.9%.
- Limiting reactant: in 2H2 + O2 → 2H2O, if 4 mol H2 react with 1 mol O2, O2 is limiting because it needs only 2 mol H2; 2 mol H2 are left in excess.
- Also: empirical and molecular formulas, calculations from balanced equations, percentage yield.
Unit 3: Solutions
- Molarity: 0.5 mol of solute in 250 mL of solution is 0.5 ÷ 0.25 = 2 mol/L.
- Dilution: M1V1 = M2V2. Diluting 50 mL of a 2 mol/L solution to 200 mL gives 0.5 mol/L.
- Also: types of solutions, solubility and solubility rules, colligative properties.
Unit 4: Thermochemistry
- Thermal systems, heat of reaction and the first law, measuring heat of reaction.
- Hess's law: when a reaction is the sum of steps, its total enthalpy change is the sum of the steps' changes. Reverse a step and ΔH changes sign; multiply a step and ΔH is multiplied too.
In every calculation, write the givens and units first, then the law, then substitute. Most mistakes are mL-to-L conversions or an unbalanced equation.
How EXAMEV helps
The EXAMEV grade 11 chemistry term 1 bank has 843 questions on the four units and 25 textbook lessons: multiple choice, true/false, fill in the blank, short answer, matching, ordering, multi-select and advanced questions, each with an explanation. Start with a 25-question practice set, then a timed exam, then the full 42-question exam. The term 2 bank is ready when you move on.
